Earthquake: a trembling of the earth's crust, caused by underground volcanic forces or shifting of rock. Created by: YEN DOAN HUNG PHAN PHUC NGUYEN Earthquakes are more common in some areas of the world than in others. you may also realize that some earthquakes are more intense than others and can cause more damage and destruction. The material underlying an area struck by an earthquake is often the ultimate factor thatdetermines the damage done by the earthquake. During an earthquake, seismic waves, or vibrations, are sent in all directions from the source of teh quake. These waves then travel at different speeds through Earth and along its surface. In rocks, earthquake waves travel quickly. In unconsolidated materials, like landfill soils, earthquake vibrations travel slowly but are amplified, or magnified, two or three times. ON SHAKY GROUND: What does this mean for ordinary buildings? The waterfront damage caused by the 1995 earthquake that struck Kobe in Japan occurred because of the unstable subsoils that underlie that area of the city. The spongy, clay-rich soil behaved like jelly as the quake roared through the city. The 1989 SanFrancisco-area earthquake destroyed hundreds of houses when groundwater made its way upward during the quake, turning the soils in the Marina district into a morass of quicksand. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
